После счастливого окончания расследования они объединятся.► 1-й из 8 фильмов о мистере Мото; вместе они составляют самый знаменитый цикл фильмов о частном сыщике – после цикла о Чарли Чане, который, впрочем, послужил ему образцом для подражания и, конечно же после цикла о Шерлоке Холмсе. В отличие от цикла про Чарли Чана, Петер Лорре был единственным исполнителем роли мистера Мото, хотя, надо признать, экранная жизнь этого героя была слишком коротка (1937―1939) из-за его японской национальности и приближения войны. Элегантный (часто одетый в белое), с необычной походкой и дикцией, щупловатый на вид, Мото в действительности – опасный боец, знаток джиу-джитсу; он способен отправлять в нокаут (в данном случае – за борт) гораздо более грузных соперников. Помимо прочих своих талантов, он весьма поднаторел в искусстве переодевания, карточных фокусах и мастерстве иллюзиониста. Он, несомненно, ас частного сыска, вдобавок часто выражается афоризмами (все же не настолько колоритными, как те, что произносил его китайский коллега Чарли Чан). Отметим, что в этом фильме Мото – не профессиональный сыщик. «В миру» он управляет импортно-экспортной компанией: контрабандисты мешают ее работе, поэтому он и хочет с ними расправиться. Зрители больше всего любят в цикле именно 1-ю серию (наряду с фильмом Спасибо, мистер Мото, Thank You, Mr. Moto, 1938), и стоит напомнить, что подобного рода устаревшие развлекательные картины с весьма бесцветной режиссурой и зачастую нелогичными или предсказуемыми сюжетами до сих пор насчитывают немало сторонников.N.В.
